CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The 5th District seat on the Bradley County School Board will remain vacant until the Nov. 2 election.
Bradley County Commissioner Jeff Yarber said Tuesday that whoever was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the death of Terry McGuire would serve in only one school board meeting.
“So their congratulatory first meeting would also be their farewell meeting,” Yarber said.
Tuesday was the first commission session for five members elected in August.
They joined their colleagues to vote unanimously for Louie Alford for another 12-month term as commission chairman.
Mark Hall, the 7th District commissioner, was elected vice chairman.
They also dealt with another vacancy. Charlie McKenzie resigned from his 7th District constable position to become a Cleveland City Council member.
Unlike the school board seat, time has run out to be on the November ballot for constable, County Attorney Joe Byrd told commissioners.
Commissioners declared the post vacant, however, so McKenzie could take his City Council seat.
McKenzie was on the ballot for City Council and county constable and won both.
The commission could make a constable appointment in two weeks.
Commissioners also agreed to wait for two weeks to vote on a property offer from Volunteer Energy Cooperative.
Responding to a county advertisement, Volunteer offered an acre of its Georgetown Road property for $28,000. The property would be the location for the County Fire Department’s third station. Cleveland has five.
New Commissioner J. Adam Lowe asked for a delay so newly elected members could learn more about the county’s fire plan for the future.
