Q: How long should I continue to feed the goldfish and koi in my new garden pond? They seem just as hungry now that the weather is cooler, but I am a bit confused as to what I should do for the winter months and how long I should run the filter.
A: As long as the fish are active and the outside temps are above 40 degrees, you should continue to feed them, as it is important that they enter hibernation in a fat and healthy condition. Pet stores sell a special cool weather spring and fall diet that pond fish can digest much faster than the regular summer foods. The cooler weather slows fish metabolism. When the temps are below 40 degrees, stop feeding the fish, as they are too dormant by then.
