Letters to the Editor

Quarry operators must follow rules

This is in response to a letter (Sept. 16) regarding the Calhoun quarry:

Crushed stone products reach into every corner of our everyday life. Roads, schools and hospitals use rock, but also toothpaste, paper and cosmetics.

Each person in the U.S.A. effectively uses 12 tons per year and the greater the distance this has to travel the greater the cost.

East Tennessee Materials is building a quarry to meet the demands of the market place. Furthermore, we will provide taxes and jobs to an area which has suffered, like many, from the downturn. However, to claim that just because we are a quarry we ride roughshod over the environment is baseless.
