KNOXVILLE – The University of Tennessee Medical Center has sealed off two patient rooms and thoroughly inspected the entire hospital following the discovery of bed bugs over the weekend.
The bugs were initially found by a patient’s family member in a sleeper chair in the patient’s room, according to a statement issued Monday by Norman Majors, UT Medical Center’s vice president and chief administrative officer.
“We immediately moved the patient and family to another room and alerted our facilities staff and a professional exterminator, who confirmed the presence of bed bugs and, upon careful inspection, determined it was limited to two rooms, and only in the visitor sleeper chairs, not in any patient beds,” Majors’ statement reads.
“Both rooms were treated by the exterminator and the chairs were discarded. As a precaution, we will keep the rooms closed and out of service for a period of 17 days. Further, we conducted a complete inspection of the entire hospital. Our professional exterminator tells us the medical center is safe for all patients, staff and visitors.
