Dalton studies public transit

DALTON, Ga. — More than 200 people packed a public transit study forum to offer input about what they would like to see from future public transportation in Dalton.

“We want to find out what will make public transit a success in the city of Dalton, we’re looking for robust public engagement,” Mignon Allen, president of Dovetail Consulting, told the group Thursday evening.

The company, which specializes in transportation planning, is doing the transit study for the Greater Dalton Metropolitan Planning Organization. It will gather information from residents, look at census data and technical information about Dalton and combine all that information into a report, Allen said.

Thursday’s meeting was hosted by the Coalition for Latino Leaders. The consulting group will hold two more public forums, one in November and one in February, to gather additional information before providing a report in February.

Dalton does not have a fixed route public transit. Whitfield County provides an on-call system, but the service must be requested at least a day in advance. About 60 percent of the people using that service live in Dalton, Allen said.
