The important work of United Way of Greater Chattanooga

All of us realize – especially at this time of year – that many of our people have pressing welfare, health and personal needs. That is especially true when we consider the current painfully high unemployment rate.

Generous people naturally like to lend a helping hand – but in an efficient way.

That’s why we have the United Way of Greater Chattanooga.

The United Way is an efficient means to get help to those in need, with tremendous value and effectiveness for each dollar contributed.

Our local United Way has succeeded in reaching its goal every year since it was founded, and local residents are rightly proud of that success.

Energetic volunteer United Way workers are both inspired and diligent. They make it easy for us to make gifts and payroll-deduction pledges to finance a range of vital services.

Chattanooga-area givers, in turn, are willing to contribute, particularly since they see the long track record of valuable service by the United Way of Greater Chattanooga.

The goal this year is to raise $11.5 million to meet the needs of our people through the fine United Way member agencies. As of early this week, more than $8 million had been pledged by the charitably minded people of this area. We are confident local givers soon will meet the rest of the goal.

The volunteer chairman of the United Way campaign this year is Tom Glenn, president of the local Ace Hardware group. He has many devoted volunteer campaign workers helping him – and all of us – make Chattanooga a better and more benevolent place to live.

The Christmas season is a good time to help our people and our whole community through United Way giving.

We gratefully acknowledge the important service of United Way, and we urge everyone who is able to pitch in.
