Logan Gray, who was hoping to be Georgia’s starting quarterback this time last year, announced Tuesday that he will transfer for his final year of eligibility.
The ESPN top-40 prospect from 2007 had moved to wide receiver with the Bulldogs.
Gray is scheduled to graduate in May in speech communication.
“I want to express sincere appreciation to Logan for his many contributions to our program the last four years,” Bulldogs coach Mark Richt said. “He has been an asset to our team and program as both a player and student, and we wish him nothing but the very best.”
The 6-foot-2, 199-pounder from Columbia, Mo., was beaten out last spring by Aaron Murray and contemplated transferring then. Gray chose to stay and embrace a new opportunity at wide receiver, and he had nine receptions for 105 yards this past season, including a 26-yard touchdown catch against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Gray was among ESPN’s top 40 prospects in the 2007 class and was rated by Rivals.com as the No. 10 dual-threat quarterback. He redshirted in ’07 and wound up with career passing totals of 5-for-12 for 31 yards with two interceptions.
One of his interceptions was returned by Brandon Spikes for a touchdown in Florida’s 41-17 win at Jacksonville in 2009.
“I plan on playing my last year of football while pursuing my master’s degree at another school, most likely close to home, where my family can attend all of my games,” Gray said. “I would like to thank Coach Richt for giving me the opportunity to be a Bulldog the last four years and sticking beside me throughout the whole experience.
“I would also like to thank my teammates for everything. They are like another family to me, and I know I will be close with several of them for the rest of my life.”
Gray’s departure leaves Georgia with four returning scholarship receivers who had catches last season: Tavarres King, Marlon Brown, Rantavious Wooten and Israel Troupe. The Bulldogs bring back their tight end trio of Orson Charles, Aron White and Bruce Figgins.
Georgia is tentatively scheduled to open spring practice March 10 and resume March 22 following spring break. The G-Day game will be April 16 at 1 p.m.
