Cold could bring more snow, but not enough to stick

Chattanoogans should get ready for chill, but chances of snow accumulation are very slim, forecasters say.

“Be prepared for the cooler temperatures, dress appropriately and use caution when driving,” said Mary Black, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn., in advance of the cold-weather system moving through the area later today — cold enough that wet roads could freeze overnight.

“We are looking at snow as it moves through, but it’s looking to be very light,” she said. “There’s a better chance of snow north of I-40.”

This morning’s low was near 30 with a high of about 46 forecast today.

There is a possibility of light snow flurries after midnight going into Friday morning, said WRCB-Channel 3 meteorologist Nick Austin.

“Some of the higher elevations late tonight to the morning hours of Friday will get maybe half an inch, but it will probably change to rain Friday, so it will get slushy and wash away,” he said.

Temperatures for the next couple of days will be just below normal. The low Friday morning is expected to dip to 25, but the day should warm up to near 40.

The normal temperature in Chattanooga for this time of the year are highs in the upper 40s and lows of about 30, said Black.

The area has received 2.4 inches of precipitation in the first few days of 2011, 1.57 inches above normal, Black said. Although there’s a chance of snow flurries combined with rain, it shouldn’t add much to that total, she said.

Besides the cooler temperatures, most of the weekend should be fairly quiet, Austin said.

“Most areas for the bulk of the weekend are going to stay dry, outside of just a flurry or two,” he said.
