Lipizzaner Stallions visit

The 41st anniversary tour of the World-Famous Lipizzaner Stallions will make two stops in the region this month: Thursday in Rainsville, Ala., and the following Tuesday in Rome, Ga.

The shows feature music, choreography and routines that emphasize the historical background and foundation of the Lipizzaners. The stallions originally were bred for use as horses of war, later becoming a breed associated with nobility and aristocracy and now considered a living form of equestrian art.

Included in the performances is a segment called “Airs Above the Ground,” showcasing the leaps and maneuvers once used by riders in saddle to defend themselves on the battlefield.

The show concludes with the traditional Grand Quadrille, featuring six to eight stallions with their riders performing an intricate, equine ballet.
