NASHVILLE – The Hermitage, the home of President Andrew Jackson, today is commemorating the 196th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans.
Jackson led his Army troops to victory over 8,000 British forces at the battle in 1815. He became a national hero and later was the country’s seventh president.
There will be free admission today to the Hermitage. There also will be a traditional wreath-laying ceremony at Jackson’s tomb. Additionally, there will be a lecture by author Patricia Brady about her new book, “A Being So Gentle,” a biography of Rachel Donelson Jackson, Jackson’s wife.
The Hermitage is a 1,120-acre National Historic Landmark east of downtown Nashville. It is a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate Museum with some 180,000 visitors annually.
