It is disappointing, though not surprising, that a three-judge panel of the ultraliberal 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has declared it “unconstitutional” for a cross to remain on land in a public park in San Diego.
The cross was dedicated 56 years ago as part of a memorial to honor veterans of the Korean War.
We see no evidence that a majority of Korean War veterans object to the cross in their honor, any more than families of deceased veterans object to crosses and Stars of David on graves in publicly funded national cemeteries. (Will those symbols be the next to go in the quest to “cleanse” the public of any expression of religious faith?)
Nor do we accept the court’s objection that the San Diego cross promotes a “state-endorsed religion.” The cross is not about the “state” but about the veterans who honorably served their country.
The ruling against the San Diego cross should be overturned.
