Scholarship deadline for engineering students is Friday

Staff Report

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee announces that Jan. 21 is the deadline for engineering and land-surveying students at Tennessee colleges and universities to submit applications to ACEC of Tennessee for national and state scholarships to be awarded in 2011.

The national ACEC scholarship program will award several scholarships totaling $20,000. The national Council of Structural Engineers’ scholarship program will award a $5,000 scholarship to a structural engineering student pursuing a master’s degree in structural engineering.

ACEC of Tennessee will award a $1,000 scholarship to a student studying engineering or land surveying at a Tennessee college or university. The state scholarship winner will be announced in March; winners of national scholarships will be announced in October.

To qualify for a scholarship, students must be U.S. citizens pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or Doctor of Philosophy degree in an engineering or land-surveying program in Tennessee approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Students must be entering their junior, senior, fifth or graduate year this fall to qualify. The application process includes writing an essay on the role of the consulting engineer or surveyor in shaping and protecting the natural environment. Grade-point average and college activities also are factors in the evaluation.

Applications for the scholarship programs must be submitted to ACEC of Tennessee by Friday. Application forms and complete information can be obtained at www.acectn.org/Scholar.htm.
