MEMPHIS – Two Memphis police officers have been temporarily relieved of duty after shooting and killing a suspect who authorities say pointed his weapon at them.
Memphis Police Sgt. Alyssa Macon-Moore said in a statement the officers went to a shooting scene at 1:26 p.m. Sunday and found an armed man walking down the street.
The man did not drop his gun as commanded and pointed the weapon at the officers, Macon-Moore said. Both officers fired at the man, who was struck and taken to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis in critical condition, but was pronounced dead later.
The victim, who was shot by the suspect, was transported to the hospital in non-critical condition.
The identities of the officers, the deceased suspect and the man he allegedly shot were not immediately released.
Macon-Moore says the officers remain off duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
