Snow, rain mix expected early on Wednesday

Hamilton County could see as little as no snow or as much as a lot Tuesday and Wednesday, and that’s as specific as the National Weather Service could get Sunday night.

“I wouldn’t hazard a guess at this point,” said spokesman Derek Eisentrout of the weather service office in Morristown, Tenn. “A mix is what it’s looking like. It’s going to mix from snow back to rain then back into snow.”

FORECASTMonday: Partly cloudy, high 49, low 29, 10 percent chance of precipitation.Tuesday: Rain developing in afternoon, changing to rain/snow mix before dawn Wednesday. High 46, low 32.Wednesday: Precipitation ending around midday. High 41, low 32.Source: WRCB-TV

Eisentrout said a storm developing in southern Texas and moving along the Gulf Coast should hit Tennessee, Georgia and the Florida panhandle late Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Because of an unpredictable low pressure system carrying cold winds, whether that storm means lots of rain or lots of snow is up in the air.

But temperatures expected to be in the upper 40s during the day and low 30s at night mean that whatever happens won’t be nearly as bad as the Jan. 9-10 storm that dumped 6 to 8 inches across the region.

Meteorologist Nick Austin with WRCB-TV reports that snow is unlikely to lay in the Tennessee Valley, and only minor accumulation is expected on the Cumberland Plateau.

“What we’re getting really isn’t doing a whole of sticking around,” Eisentrout said.
