The Georgia Department of Revenue shed a little more light on its decision to recall tax refunds for thousands of taxpayers over the weekend.
In a statement released Tuesday evening, officials said the department became aware of a computer system error in the calculation of refunds deposited on Saturday.
“To ensure that correct payments were made to taxpayers, the Department issued a ‘stop payment’ on those refunds,” the release states.
The release goes on to explain that the department “is commencing to reissue the refunds.”
Some taxpayers wound up several hundred dollars overdrawn and some face more than $200 in fees and reconnection fees.
“The Department is working with various financial institutions concerning any banking charges made against taxpayers’ financial accounts,” the release states.
A department spokesman said more details such as the number of taxpayers involved would be available later.
