A defeat for Planned Parenthood

It is no secret that Americans differ sharply on the subject of abortion. But wherever you may stand on that issue, it is clear that taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize, directly or indirectly, the killing of babies in the womb. It is abhorrent to force someone to pay for a procedure that he considers the snuffing out of an innocent life.

So it is a victory for unborn babies and for taxpayers that government funds have been cut off to Planned Parenthood in Nashville, after a grant was redirected to the city’s public health department.

Defenders of Planned Parenthood argue that the government funds which the organization gets do not actually pay for abortions. But that’s a mere technicality. Government money used for different services can simply free up other money for abortions.

“Planned Parenthood is an abortion business,” Brian Harris, president of Tennessee Right to Life, told the Tennessean newspaper. “It is inappropriate for tax dollars to go to such an agency.”

He’s absolutely right.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, imposing so-called abortion “rights” on the nation, was appalling and wrong. But even if abortion is legal, it is disgusting to force taxpayers to subsidize it. And so it is good news that Planned Parenthood in Nashville will no longer get the government funding it has received in the past.
