Keeping cool in summer heat

If you’ve stepped outside in the past few days, you probably already know that thermometers have registered temperatures in the high 90s. It’s July. What do we expect?

A few showers and storms are likely over the next few days, before temperatures moderate a bit. But the current swelter should remind us to avoid heat-related dangers.

Some people don’t have air conditioning or fans at home. Those of us who can should check on them and offer assistance. Many others work outdoors in direct sun, where heat exhaustion is a danger. That calls for adequate water intake and periods of rest. Outdoor pets need plentiful water and shade, too.

Summer can be a time of great enjoyment. But caution during periods of extreme heat can keep enjoyment from turning into illness or even tragedy.
