Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church is hosting Vacation Bible School June 13-16 from 9 a.m. to noon titled Kickin it Old School with the Go Fish Guys. Completed kindergartners through fifth-graders can attend the VBS for free.

The Go Fish Guys, based out of Minnesota, are a contemporary Christian band that makes CDs for children. Each morning VBS will start with a concert featuring the Go Fish Guys performing on a drop-down screen.

“The Go Fish Guys took several old hymns and updated the songs to make them fun for kids to listen to,” said SMPC VBS co-director Celestial Allen. “They are trying to get across that things in the Bible that are old are still true and relevant today.”

Allen said songs children sing at VBS include a jazz style version of “Christ the Solid Rock,” a rock n’ roll version of “The Lord’s Army” and “This is my Father’s World,” and a ballad version of “The Old Rugged Cross.”

“Our mission project will be creating gift baskets for the women of Widow’s Harvest,” said Allen. “The children will donate items to go in the baskets and make cards for the women. Children will make fleece blankets by cutting strips and tying them together.”

She said children will donate dish soaps, dish towels, cookies, tea bags, hand lotion, paper towels, a bag of hard candy and coffee to put in the Widow’s Harvest baskets. Widow’s Harvest repairs widows’ homes and feeds the women meals.

The VBS will include five rotations each day including snacks, crafts, missions, games and Bible study. Children will have daily themes including creator, king, savior and rock, all terms used to describe Jesus.

“Being able to share the love of God with children at VBS is the best part,” said Allen. “We had 350 kids attend VBS last year. We have 100 volunteers helping this year. We are excited to get it going.”

Vacation Bible School co-directors Julie Perez and Jennifer Johnson will help Allen with coordinating activities.
