We have too many laws

We are fortunate that we are “a nation of laws, not of men.” That means we are to be governed not by rulers whose actions are arbitrary, but by laws enacted by representatives of the people.

Surely, though, we have too many laws these days.

Congress enacts laws in large numbers. And we have been reminded that members of our Tennessee General Assembly introduced about 2,200 bills this session!

Fortunately, most bills do not make it into law. But too many proposals pass and become part of our accumulated clutter of laws – wise and unwise. The result is a greater burden on our people and on businesses and other organizations to determine what is or is not legal.

Gov. Bill Haslam has appealed to legislators to slow down and introduce fewer bills – for good reason.
