Sequatchie wins Meigs event

The Sequatchie County softball team won the Meigs County’s Lady Tiger Classic at Dayton over the weekend, defeating Clarksville Northeast 6-5 in Saturday’s championship game.

Ashley Moffitt paced the offense by going 11-for-19 (.579) with a home run and two doubles. She equaled teammate Emily Dagnan with 12 RBIs and scored one less run than Meredith Mitchell’s team-high 14. Dagnan was 9-for16 (.563) and Mitchell was 10-for-22 (.455). Each had a triple and two doubles.

Another key contributor was Chasity Carlton, who went 11-for-22 with a double, eight runs scored and seven driven in.

With Kelsey Keener away in New York on a senior trip, junior Brooklyn Girdley, seldom used as a pitcher a year ago, was the winning pitcher in four of the Lady Indians’ six victories. She had 12 strikeouts in her 22 innings pitched, and although she gave up 28 hits, she limited her walks to two.

“I wasn’t nervous about us hitting, but I was worried about our pitching before the season,” Sequatchie coach Courtney Stewart said. “This gives us a boost to start the season. It’s something to build on. I think it’s going to help our seniors who weren’t very clear and may have been nervous about this season.”
