GerVaughn McGhee has played summer basketball with his father as coach for seven summers.
McGhee has decided to play his college basketball at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with John Shulman as his coach.
The 6-foot-2 combo guard from Louisiana called Shulman on Sunday and told the coach that he’ll be a Moc for life.
“We talked about a lot of stuff on Sunday,” McGhee said. “It’s a nice environment, a nice school and they have nice facilities, and it’s a family atmosphere.”
McGhee said he averaged 23.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game last year at Redemptorist High School in Baton Rouge.
He patterns his game in the fashion of former Davidson guard Stephen Curry, now starring for the Golden State Warrior.
“Sometimes, if I hit a couple 3s, I’m coming down thinking I can make another shot and may shoot from where I shouldn’t,” McGhee said. “I love the way Steph plays. He could do what he wanted. I’d like to do that.”
McGhee chose UTC over Murray State, Arkansas State, UTEP and Louisiana Tech, according to his father, Ronnie, who has influenced his basketball career.
“He’s a perimeter shooter, and he’s also a big guard who can post up, so he’s a very versatile guard,” the elder McGhee said. “He’s strong at a lot of things, and there aren’t too many weaknesses in his game. But coaches at UTC can pick those out and work on them with him.
“I think he fits real well with UTC.”
