Two-man race on Oval track

Are you looking forward to our next presidential election?

Or are you dreading it or experiencing some other emotion?

How much attention do you pay to opinion polls?

Well, the next election of the president of our great United States of America is approaching — just eight months away?

Of course, the Democrat and Republican national nominating conventions are still months away. But it seems certain that the Democrats will re-nominate President Barack Obama, and the Republicans will nominate Mitt Romney after this week’s withdrawal by Rick Santorum.

Now that the field has been trimmed and the two major political parties appear to have their candidates, the pollsters are already busy.

Asking voters “if the election were held today,” the polls show President Obama would win a second term rather comfortably with 51 percent of the votes. Romney was the choice for 44 percent of those asked in the Washington Post/ABC news poll. That’s a pretty good margin and suggests any November surprise is unlikely.

Many people still consider the election of Mr. Obama in 2008 a surprise. But short of some really major surprising event in presidential politics, Mr. Obama seems to have a comfortable lead toward winning four more years.

What do you think about our presidential leadership, our economy, our foreign affairs — and the potential impact upon all of us for the next four years?

Are you optimistic?

We all will be greatly and personally affected by the November presidential outcome — for the next four years and beyond.
