With about five minutes remaining in the Times Free Press Best of Preps boys’ championship game Saturday night, McCallie guard Jamaal Calvin told himself that no one – not rival Baylor, not officials, not anybody – was going to take the game away from the Blue Tornado.
Calvin scored 28 points, 10 in the final 4:26, as the Blue Tornado ended the game on a 13-2 run and repeated their title with a 63-57 victory at Chattanooga State.
Calvin gave his team the lead for good with a 3-pointer from 30 feet out in transition with 3:24 remaining. He finished 6-for-12 from 3-point range and added four steals.
“It’s nice to know that I can just let it go,” he said. “I like taking that shot, but I knew how Baylor’s defense was once you got around the arc, so I pulled when I saw an opportunity.”
