A Hamilton County Jail lieutenant accused of showing up to work with alcohol in his system has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation.

Lt. Raymond Haveman, who has been with Hamilton County Sheriff's Office for 18 years, showed up with alcohol on his breath, said Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond. Haveman was administered a breath test and suspended as a result.

Hammond declined to disclose the results of the test.

"There was sufficient reason to suspend him," he said.

According to sheriff's office policy, sworn personnel must not consume alcoholic beverages within eight hours of their shift, Hammond said.

Chattanooga has the same policy.

Last month, Officer Steve Jones at Chattanooga Police Department was suspended when another officer smelled alcohol on his breath after Jones showed up to work at Riverbend.

That case also is pending.
