Lee University has named Al Hartgraves its 2012 Honorary Alumnus of the Year. The award was presented by Paul Conn during homecoming festivities.
Hartgraves has been a member of Emory University's Goizueta Business School faculty since 1980 and has held several administrative posts at Goizueta, including acting dean, senior associate dean, assistant dean and director of MBA programs. He was named Professor Emeritus in 2009.
Prior to Goizueta Business School, Hartgraves served as an associate professor of accounting at Lee beginning in 1973. He chaired Lee's Department of Business from 1974-1975 and was appointed the dean of the Division of Arts and Sciences from 1975-1977.
Sale Creek woman wins Canon photo film contest
Misty Fugate of Sale Creek is a finalist in Canon's Project Imaginat10n, a user-generated photo contest to inspire short films that will be directed by actors Eva Longoria and Jamie Foxx, Georgina Chapman (designer and co-founder of Marchesa womenswear), James Murphy (founder of the band LCD Soundsystem) and Biz Stone (co-founder of Twitter).
Each of the celebrities will be mentored by director Ron Howard as they develop films inspired by 10 photos selected from a pool of 91 winners representing pillars in storytelling.
Fugate's photograph, "Predator," was selected among Chapman's 10 photos.
Chapman's film will go into production in 2013 and Fugate will be invited to the Canon Project Imaginat10n Film Festival to see it on screen.
Video winners announced
Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise and the Association for Visual Arts celebrated the second My Neighborhood Rocks video contest with a video premiere at Miller Plaza's Waterhouse Pavilion.
East Lake's neighborhood video won the $5,000 prize, while Highland Park's film was named first runner-up and Glenwood was second runner-up.
Scholarship named for Darlia M. Conn
Lee University announces the creation of a new scholarship, the Darlia McLuhan Conn African Student Endowment Scholarship, a needs-based scholarship for African students attending Lee.
The endowment was spearheaded by Lee alumnus Kelvin Tarukwasha and Augustine Bocco.
Tarukwasha acknowledged the assistance of Larry Berry, Augustine Bocco, Renee Lastra, Mike Formont, Brie McDaniel and Phil Cook in establishing the scholarship.
Piano donation honors Johnson
Catherine "Cacky" Wentworth-Johnson recently donated a piano in honor of her late husband, Harry C. Johnson Jr., to Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens, Tenn. The piano will be used for events held in Sherman Hall.
Wentworth-Johnson graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan in 1962 with a dual degree in piano performance and education.
Johnson, a 1947 graduate of the college, received a degree in culture before becoming owner of Johnson Real Estate, where he managed several apartment complexes.
He remained a consistent donor to Tennessee Wesleyan and endowed a music scholarship in honor of his late wife, Mary Elizabeth Johnson. Johnson led a committee in 1993 to raise funds for renovations on the school's Townsend Memorial Hall stage and he was the first president of the Tennessee Wesleyan College Board of Visitors.
