Dalton State College is starting a golf program a year earlier than planned, thanks to the generosity of local businessman Bob Shaw of carpet fame.
“We were originally going to start golf in 2014, but we’ll be ready to go in 2013 with the help of Bob Shaw,” Dalton State athletic director Derek Waugh revealed last week, “who has been kind enough to allow us to use The Farm as our home golf course and to help financially with all that goes into having a championship-caliber golf team.
“The Farm is one of the finest courses in the country and already hosts one of the most prestigious tournaments in college golf,” Waugh said in reference to the Carpet Capital Collegiate, held annually in September.
“As we make The Farm our home course, our future golfers will have access to one of the finest collegiate facilities in the country,” Waugh added. “The chance to play and practice at The Farm will be an amazing recruiting sell for our golf program, and it will give us a chance to be very competitive within a very short time frame.”
Dalton State already had announced intentions to start a volleyball program in the 2013 season and men’s basketball for 2013-14, the latter with Tony Ingle as coach. Coaching positions for volleyball, tennis and competition cheering have been advertised.
