Apalachicola, Fla.

When the summer gets hot in the Tennessee Valley, it has us yearning for a gentle sea breeze. But as outdoor enthusiasts, we know that not just any beach will do-because who wants to sit still all day?

That low-key beach adventure you’re looking for can be found in the small town of Apalachicola, Florida. The town was founded in the 1800s and was most likely named for the “people on the other side of the river.” Apalachicola is now home to our oysters, but the surrounding barrier islands make it a timeless destination.

Paddle It

There’s nothing too challenging about the flat waters of the Florida swamps, but don’t think you’ll be leaving your paddles at home. Many areas have connected waterways so you can paddle from the swamp through to the bay. Ocean kayaking on the crystal blue waters of the Gulf Coast is also a great way to see some wildlife. And if you’re feeling extra daring, try getting on a paddleboard.
