Jerry Drye, a professional humorist, will offer a lecture on “Talking Funny” tonight, March 14, in Dalton, Ga.
Drye, an assistant professor of communication at Dalton State College, teaches a class in humor communication and courses in public speaking. In a news release, he said he developed the humor course while teaching at Clemson University.
His presentation, “Talking Funny: The Power of Being Amazingly Amusing in Life and Work,” will start at 7:30 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium on campus. Admission is free. Dalton State is just west of I-75 at Exit 333.
Colleagues have described Drye as “100 percent engaging,” “genuinely warm and funny” and “wholesomely irreverent.”
However, Dr. Lou Davidson Tillson, professor of organizational communication at Murray State University, does admit to second-guessing her decision to have him speak to some of her students.
“I hired Jerry to speak to my public-speaking class and regretted my decision the very next day,” she wrote. “All I heard from my students were things like, ‘He was so funny’ … ‘I loved his examples. He was hilarious’ … ‘ What a great storyteller. When can he come back?’ I had no idea how difficult it would be to follow someone like that.”
