TVA logo tileCLINTON, Tenn. - The Tennessee Valley Authority has declined to release the incentives it awarded an auto parts maker that is expanding in Clinton.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the newspaper requested the documents after the $81 million expansion in the East Tennessee town was announced over the summer.
Denise Smith, TVA's Freedom of Information Act officer, said in a letter last week that the agency has never disclosed specific incentives given to specific companies. She said the information is being withheld based on an exemption to the Freedom of Information Act that "would place the government at a competitive disadvantage."
Those who advocate for open government disagreed and said it was outrageous that the agency won't release the information.
TVA is the nation's largest public utility, serving 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states.
