Controversial development gains community, commission approval

The developer of Enclave at East Hamilton, Bassam Issa, is preparing for the first phase of construction after Hamilton County commissioners voted unanimously to approve the commercial development at their Nov. 19 meeting.

“I am just happy the community is happy,” Issa said following the meeting.

Community approval for the development came after Issa signed a legal document agreeing to 15 stipulations to ensure that the design and construction remain in keeping with the terms discussed in 16 community meetings held to address nearby residents’ concerns.

Prior to those meetings, the proposed development on 53 acres of currently undeveloped land featured a controversial residential aspect, which community members vocally opposed. The agreed-upon stipulations for the now entirely commercial development will limit the total square footage, phases of construction, architecture, design and more.

County Commissioner Sabrena Turner, who represents the district in which Enclave at East Hamilton will be located, thanked the developer and community for working toward a positive – and profitable – solution for the area.
