A telephone scam involving a fake IRS agent is targeting Bradley County residents, according to Sheriff Eric Watson.
A news release said the fake agent calls people and says they will be prosecuted for a tax violation unless they put money on a reloadable Green Dot card for the agent. If the payment is made, the so-called “tax violation” would be taken off the person’s record.
The release said the caller speaks in broken English, leaving instructions and a number to call back when the money has been deposited on the Green Dot card.
Watson said that the Internal Revenue Service does not do business by phone or use Green Dot cards. He said residents should not give such a caller either money or personal financial information.
Instead, he said, call law enforcement.
