If you were to create a superhero, what qualities would he or she have? This is a question participants in the upcoming superhero puppet making class at the MACC will answer as they create their own superhero character and turn it into a puppet.
The class is being led by Colleen Laliberte and Megan Holmes, the same duo behind the superhero bookmaking class that started in January. One does not need to have participated in the bookmaking class to join the puppet making class, Laliberte said, but those who did the bookmaking class will be able to continue with their same character.
“We’ll explain all the elements that make a hero and have them take those ideas and make a puppet character,” Laliberte said.
Participants will be building rod puppets with papier mache heads based on the designs of Fred Arnold, a longtime creator of puppet theater in Chattanooga. Students will sculpt, paint, sew, animate and write during the six-week course, being held Mondays starting Feb. 24 from 6-7 p.m.
Laliberte said she will teach participants how to make a movable mouth for their superhero, for which they will also develop a background story.
