Everyone has a story-the sequence of events that make up a person’s life. Stories are full of defining moments, everyday living and the presence of other people and characters. Some people even have the rare ability to turn their story into a masterpiece.

About Clyde Edgerton

Clyde Edgerton is the author of 12 books, including The Bible Salesman and Papadaddy’s Book for New Fathers. He has also written pieces for Garden & Gun and New York Times Magazine, and is a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers. For more about Edgerton visit clydeedgerton.com.

Every summer, the Southern Lit Alliance hosts the fundraiser and silent auction Art-a-majig to raise money for the organization. This year, the theme of the July 31 event is “stories.” Local artists were invited to participate in the event and encouraged to weave their art into the theme. “We wanted to connect our name and mission to this fundraiser,” says Southern Lit Alliance Executive Director Susan Robinson. “Stories come from both literary and visual art, and we wanted to portray that.”

This year’s theme was influenced by popular southern writer Clyde Edgerton, who will be a contributing artist and special guest at Art-a-ma-jig. Edgerton gave participating artists a quote for inspiration:

“Stories gave me the chance to change from the writing chaos of the universe into something more comfortable.” Not only will he be attending Art-a-ma-jig, but he will also be sharing his wisdom by directing a writing workshop on July 30 for middle and high school teachers.

The event even includes an element of surprise. “Although we know which artists are participating in the fundraiser, their creations aren’t revealed until the night of the event. We are looking forward to seeing how the artists have incorporated ‘stories’ into their art,” Robinson says. Guests can bid on the art, which will include a variety of paintings, as well as pottery, jewelry and mixed media.

Art-a-ma-jig will take place at the Church on Main July 31 from 6-8:30 p.m. Find out more at southernlitalliance.org.
