SMHS band hosts Swing, Swang, Swung May 9

The community is invited to step back in time and enjoy 1940s-era jazz music at the Signal Mountain High School Band’s third annual Swing, Swang, Swung fundraiser. The event is being held in the Great Hall at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church Friday, May 9 at 7 p.m.

Dinner, dancing and a silent auction will all be part of the evening. The high school jazz band and Sweet Georgia Sound will each play 45-minute sets.

“It will be a lot of fun,” said organizer Karen Hudson. “You will not be able to tell the difference between the high school students and the professional band.”

The school band is growing by about 10 marching students next year, she said. The event will raise funds to go into the band’s general fund as well as toward the purchase of two new sousaphones, which Hudson said range from $6,000 to $7,000.

Among the items available in the silent auction are a stadium bag with blanket and cow bell, gift certificates to local businesses, artwork and a carpet cleaning.

Tickets to the event are $25 and dinner is being catered by Dish T’Pass.
