Lacrosse isn’t just a sport for people who live in the Northeast or go to private schools.
That’s a message UTC’s lacrosse team is trying to drive home in the Scenic City. With relatively few resources outside player dues, the club team has thrice won its conference title, its conference championship and competed on the national level. This year, the team hopes to bring home its first national title.
“We are starting to grow and people are starting to get a sense that we have a team,” said player Adam Harbin. “We need to have people know we are a team, we are here and we’re good.”
From humble beginnings in 2006 to back-to-back-to-back bids at a national championship, the team hopes its success and passion for the sport spreads at the university and beyond.
“We’re trying to get plugged into the community and grow the game in the area,” said the team’s coach Zach Taylor.
Nicknamed “the fastest sport on two feet,” the complexity of lacrosse is the reason many of the team’s players, some of whom played in high school, say they enjoy it so much.
“It’s so fast and it takes a lot of dexterity and gracefulness,” said player Calvin Fluhr. “It forces players to be well rounded.”
