PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The ride-sharing service Uber X has entered the Philadelphia market, sparking the same kind of opposition from regulators it has faced in other cities.
The Philadelphia Parking Authority regulates taxi service and says Uber X drivers are not licensed to offer passenger rides. The agency has impounded 15 vehicles and slapped drivers with fines.
Uber X’s entry into the taxicab market has caused regulators in other cities to struggle over whether it should be allowed to operate. Taxicab unions have tried to protect drivers’ livelihoods.
Riders use Uber’s smartphone app to seek out rides. Uber does not own the vehicles or employ the drivers.
The state’s Public Utility Commission is expected to vote Thursday on Uber X’s application to operate in many other parts of Pennsylvania.
