KNOXVILLE – Tennessee continues to add to its 2015 football recruiting class.
Atlanta cornerback Micah Abernathy, a four-star prospect according to 247Sports.com, ESPN and Scout.com, announced his commitment to the Volunteers on his Twitter account Friday morning, about 36 hours after Nashville athlete Vincent Perry also pulled the trigger for Tennessee.
The two additions push Tennessee’s 2015 class to 26 public commitments.
“I’m happy and blessed to say I have officially committed to the University of Tennessee! I can’t wait for the next 4 years,” Abernathy tweeted Friday morning.
The 6-foot-1, 187-pounder out of Greater Atlanta Christian School took official visits the past two weeks to Tennessee for the loss to Florida and to Georgia for its game against the Vols. He also took an official visit to Oregon last month.
In addition to the Bulldogs and Ducks, Abernathy had scholarhip offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Florida, Southern California, South Carolina and Wisconsin, among others.
Abernathy’s grandfather, Ralph David Abernathy Sr., was a leader in the American Civil Rights movement and a close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and his older brother, Ralph David IV, played for Tennessee coach Butch Jones and his staff at Cincinnati.
During the past three seasons, Abernathy IV totaled 922 rushing yards, 516 receiving yards, 2,186 yards on 87 kickoff returns and 13 total touchdowns, but he’s played in just two games for the Bearcats this season.
The 5-11, 170-pound Perry plays for Hillsboro High School, as does defensive end Kyle Phillips, another top target for the Vols.
“I just see the potential for winning up in Knoxville, and I just want to be a part of it,” Perry told The Tennessean in Nashville. “I believe in everything [Coach Jones] is doing with the program, and I want to be part of something special.”
Perry missed most of his junior season after transferring from Pope John Paul II, and despite undergoing ACL surgery earlier this year, he’s totaled nearly 1,000 yards and scored 13 touchdowns this season.
The speedy Perry, a standout baseball player as well, recently received a scholarship offer from Kentucky.
Tennessee is hosting Ole Miss commitment Drew Richmond, a touted offensive tackle out of Memphis, on an unofficial visit this weekend.
