1 dead as severe storms move through Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Authorities say a falling tree landed on a mobile home in Walker County, killing a woman inside and injuring her husband.

Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe says 75-year-old Shirley Hicks died Monday after a large tree fell on her mobile home in Burnwell – about 25 miles northwest of Birmingham.

Poe says the woman’s husband was inside at the time and was taken to a local hospital by relatives. Details on the extent of his injuries weren’t immediately available.

Forecasters say severe storms capable of producing tornadoes are expected to cross Alabama Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

Alabama Power officials say the storms have left roughly 47,500 customers without service, about 25,000 in the metro Birmingham area.

Tornado, severe thunderstorm and flash flood watches cover most of the state.
