Our days are divisive, chaotic and even uncivil as inflammatory and hyper-responsive politics rooted in disrespect are the rule and not the exception. So, employing Alex Haley’s admonition that’s been often used by Sen. Lamar Alexander, “Find the good and praise it,” can be especially gratifying.
“The good” found me in the midst of a hectic day last week in Tennessee’s capital when I bumped into a moment that brought a smile and a reminder that great things do happen in little islands. In this case, Chattanooga’s Girls Leadership Academy.
Hurrying out of Legislative Plaza, also known as the sausage grinder of law, I was walking to my office for a business appointment. Distracted by my smartphone’s calendar notifying me to move quickly for promptness, I heard my named called just as I approached the exit.
Dr. Elaine Swafford, executive director of Chattanooga’s Girls Leadership Academy (CGLA), stood with her characteristic professional posture, hand extended and wearing a welcoming smile. She was accompanied by a group of young ladies getting a firsthand view of how state law is created.
After exchanging our hugs and getting a quick update on CGLA, I was out the door, but the school was not out of mind.
