MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – David L. Pyle, a bureau chief, news editor and reporter during his 33-year career for The Associated Press, has died at age 61.

Pyle’s son, Christopher, says his father died Monday at his home in Apple Valley, Minnesota. He spent the last two decades of his career as bureau chief for the news cooperative in Minnesota and Wisconsin before stepping down in 2012.

Pyle was an Iowa native who joined AP as a newsman in Omaha in 1979. He later worked in Dallas and Providence, Rhode Island, before moving to Minneapolis in 1991.

Pyle oversaw many major news stories during his tenure, including the Minneapolis bridge collapse in 2007 and Sen. Paul Wellstone’s death in a plane crash in 2002.
