Southern Surgical Arts shares truth about Brazilian Butt Lifts

As one might expect from the name, a Brazilian Butt Lift can help a person obtain a significantly more contoured and desirable shape. Different from an implant in which silicone is merely inserted to enhance the shape this procedure takes fat from the body and transfers it to the buttocks, according to Dr. Chad Deal.

One of the leading experts of this technique, Dr. Deal is a fellowship-trained, dual board certified cosmetic surgeon who has helped popularize the Brazilian Butt Lift. He has trained with leading surgeons in and out of the field of cosmetic surgery. During his first year fellowship in Las Vegas, Nevada, he performed more than 800 cosmetic surgical procedures. Since then, Dr. Deal has completed more than 4,000 procedures.

"We've seen an explosion in patient interest in this procedure," he explained. "With celebrity media attention on this topic, patients are asking how they too can have a more curvaceous lower half."

A two-in-one procedure, the Brazilian Butt Lift involves harvesting one's fat through liposuction from the abdomen, flanks and back, which is then transferred to the gluteal region of the body, resulting in a more rounded, firm look. Dr. Deal noted that it is not simply about making the buttocks larger, but rather focusing on the lower half of the hour-glass figure.

"Also known as a buttock augmentation, the Brazilian Butt Lift has been developed and refined over the last decade due to the dedication and hard work of a handful of exceptional surgeons who worked tirelessly to develop consistent, visually pleasing outcomes without sacrificing quality of care for the best possible health results," he said.

Bringing patients enhanced confidence and quality of life, is the ultimate end goal for Dr. Deal and his team.

"When you see these women come into the office for their final visit, and they are grinning from ear to ear, it's really powerful," he said. "The successes we have with these lifts are really incredible. They can't help but talk about what they've had done and how it's changed their lives."

While the majority of Brazilian Butt Lifts today are still requested by women, an increasing percentage of men are seeking the procedure. For many men, diet and exercise do not give them the results they want to achieve. Either for aesthetic effect or simply to keep their pants up the more common request more men are using this procedure to get more well-rounded and full-looking buttocks.

For any patient, Dr. Deal stresses the importance of knowing all the facts about the procedure, adding that he emphasizes safety first and results second. His experience as an anatomy professor led him to his career as a surgeon, and Dr. Deal teaches other surgeons and doctors a dissection course on the anatomy of the buttocks regarding this procedure.

"Occasionally you hear these terrible stories on the news of a patient dying," he explained. "What the public doesn't understand is if you have someone performing this procedure who doesn't know the anatomy and isn't well trained in it, you can inject fat directly into veins, resulting in a fat embolism."

He went on to explain that there is no such thing as a "butt injection," adding that there is not a single Food and Drug Administration-approved liquid injection on the market.

"We get calls asking about those injections weekly, and there are some doctors who are using hydrogels. They are illegal and it's absolutely unsafe," he said.

Good candidates for the procedure are generally between ages 25-55, non-smokers, healthy overall and are at, or near, their ideal body weight.

As a recognized expert in anatomy and buttocks augmentation throughout Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia, Dr. Deal continues to train surgeons from around the world on how to safely perform the procedure, and has spoken at five American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery events specifically on the Brazilian Butt Lift.
