WASHINGTON (AP) – Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake may be the only Republican open to supporting President Barack Obama on the Iran nuclear deal.
Flake said he’s still got some questions about the accord, which calls on Iran to curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. He’s concerned, for example, about whether the Obama administration, bound by the deal, would punish Iran for unrelated bad behavior.
Flake’s stance puts him between President Barack Obama and Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain, who opposes the deal.
Most Democrats are expected to support Obama. Most Republicans say Iran can’t be trusted and a better deal should be brokered.
Obama on Wednesday likened Republican opponents to Iranian hard-liners opposed to the deal.
