The headline in the Times Free Press on Wednesday read: “Despite rhetoric, border security not as urgent.”
What’s not as urgent? This year, only half as many children and families arrived from Central America via Mexico as last year. Last year, 468,000 illegal immigrants were welcomed at the United States’ southern border and then, for the most part, disappeared into the fabric of the United States.
So, if 234,000 more illegal immigrants arrive this year, it’s not as urgent?
The Associated Press report paints this year’s influx as having “improved steadily and markedly in some respects” and attributes it, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, to a crackdown by Mexico and better enforcement along the U.S. border.
“The urgency is done on the U.S.-Mexico border,” said Adam Isacson, border security analyst for the Washington Office on Latin America, a think tank.
