Mocs safety Lucas Webb aims to improve this season

UTC safety Lucas Webb prepares to recover a fumble — which set up a Mocs touchdown — during last year's game at Austin Peay. After a strong debut in 2013, the redshirt sophomore hopes to make this year and future seasons even better.

Lucas Webb quickly became the type of football player the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga coaching staff envisioned he would be as a redshirt freshman.

The best part of his development?

He knows there’s room for improvement.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound free safety, a STATS FCS preseason third-team All-American, was a consensus all-Southern Conference selection (first-team pick for media, second-team pick for coaches) last year in his first season on the field. He spent his offseason taking part in the Mocs’ rigorous training program, and as a result he started camp looking like a physically imposing presence in the defensive backfield.

“He’s done a great job so far. I love that kid,” UTC coach Russ Huesman said after Saturday’s practice. “He’s just a fantastic human being, a great individual and a hard worker, and that’s just the start.
