Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 420,000 vehicles, including its Chattanooga-made Passat, for a potential driver's side air bag problem.

The recall includes Passat model years 2010 to 2014. Other vehicles included are the VW CC, 2010-2014; Eos, 2010-2013; Golf, 2011-14; GTI, 2011-2014; Jetta, 2010-2013; and Tiguan, 2010-2014, according to the company.

VW said that debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. The contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.

The company told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that a loss of electrical connection to the air bag will prevent it from deploying in a vehicle crash and increase the risk of injury.

The remedy for the recall is still under development, according to VW. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.
