Isaiah Wynn giving Georgia Bulldogs versatility up front

Isaiah Wynn is easily the least-experienced member of Georgia’s starting offensive line.

That’s OK. He’s Mr. Versatility.

The 6-foot-2, 278-pound sophomore from St. Petersburg, Fla., spent most of spring practice as the first-team center before flipping positions with Brandon Kublanow and moving to left guard. Wynn has been the first-team left guard this month, but first-year line coach Rob Sale said this week that he would move to left tackle if John Theus got hurt.

“Anywhere I can contribute to the team is fine for me,” Wynn said by phone following Tuesday’s practice. “I like being versatile.”

Wynn played in 11 of 14 games last season and started in the 35-32 win over Tennessee, when the Bulldogs opened with six offensive linemen. He has since practiced at center, left guard and both tackle spots in one-on-one drills.

Sale didn’t hesitate this week when asked who would shift to left tackle if Theus went out, and he wasn’t short on praise for Wynn.

“He’s athletic,” Sale said in a news conference. “He’s got a quick twitch. He’s tough. He has all the intangibles.

“He’s an athlete, so he can go out there and cover up the edge.”

Georgia’s four other first-team linemen – Kublanow, Theus, Greg Pyke and Kolton Houston – started every game last season.

Wynn was a tackle for three years at Lakewood High before moving to guard as a senior. He was a consensus four-star prospect in the 2014 signing class and was rated the No. 6 guard nationally by ESPN and Rivals.com.

Left guard appears to be his primary position, but left tackle does have him a little curious.

“I really wouldn’t mind that, because I think that would get me a lot better having to go up against the quicker guys on the outside,” Wynn said. “I’m ready and will play wherever. We have the all the keys up front, and I’m ready to show what we can do as one unit.”

Odds and ends

The Bulldogs practiced for about an hour Tuesday before inclement weather forced them into the Nalley Multipurpose Room. Sophomore receiver and return specialist Isaiah McKenzie (hamstring) returned to workouts after missing several days. Not spotted during the portion of practice open to the media were receiver Justin Scott-Wesley, fullbacks Christian Payne and Quayvon Hicks and linebackers Tim Kimbrough and Reggie Carter.
