When he woke up, well before sunrise, checked his phone and had no missed calls or text messages, Russ Huesman knew it would be a good day.

Although he knew much of what would transpire during Wednesday’s national signing day was out of his hands at that point, like most of his peers at every level, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga head football coach still had a bit of anxiety when he went to bed Tuesday night.

“No news was really, really good news at that point,” Huesman said. “You’ve done all you can during the process of recruiting kids and you just hope that everybody sticks to their word. But there’s no guarantee until you get the papers signed.

“I actually slept pretty good. And when I checked my phone and didn’t see any messages from the staff, I felt good about all the guys we had coming in.”

The Mocs had lost one prized commitment on Tuesday afternoon when East Hamilton defensive back Martez Durrah flipped to Middle Tennessee State, but they recovered on Wednesday with Smyrna’s D.J. Williams, a two-star prospect according to Rivals.com, choosing to sign with UTC over offers from Toledo, Army, Furman, Samford, Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State.
