Cook: Save UTC track and field

To satisfy Title IX requirements, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga needs more female athletes. So instead of recruiting more women, administrators plan to eliminate men’s track and field. Need more women? Have fewer men.

It’s a decision that seems to forsake the spirit of Title IX — equality, community, common ground — for the numbers. It seems elementary and Levitical. It’s like cutting off fingers to have a higher percentage of toes.

“We are not two teams,” said Andrea Davis Hall, a champion runner at UTC. “We are one.”
