Local Hall class adding Gordon and other sports news

Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga basketball star William Gordon is being added to the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame induction class being honored March 2 at the organization’s annual banquet at the Chattanooga Convention Center. He had been elected for induction but previously was not announced for entry this year because hall board members had been unable to contact him. Contact was made this week. Gordon, the No. 2 pre-Division I scorer in Mocs history, trailing only teammate Wayne Golden, was the program’s career leader in assists when his eligibility ended after the 1977 Division II national championship. He set a program all-time record with 700 points that year. Like Golden, Gordon was one of several Louisville, Ky., recruits who also were national runners-up for UTC in 1976 and went 90-28 in four years. Gordon led Louisville Male to two consecutive Kentucky championships and was the leading scorer in the state tournament as a senior. Friday is the deadline for reserving tickets to the banquet. They cost $35 and are available through Catherine Neely at 842-7274.

Wrestling

Jared Johnson, the heavyweight who tipped the scales in UTC’s wrestling victory over Oklahoma on Sunday, has received two honors from the Southern Conference. The sophomore was named the league’s wrestler of the week and also its student-athlete of the week. Johnson defeated 11th-ranked Ross Larson to give the Mocs a 19-16 home win over Oklahoma in the first round of the NWCA National Duals. This is the second time he has been named winner of each award. Johnson has a 3.70 grade point average as a chemical engineering major. UTC will wrestle Saturday against top-ranked Iowa in the NWCA quarterfinals at Iowa City.

Basketball

Covenant College won its USA South men’s basketball game 71-67 Wednesday against Huntingdon in Montgomery, Ala., as Colton McGriff scored 21 points and was 9-for-9 at the free-throw line to lead the Scots. TJ Cox was the only other Covenant player in double figures with 12, as Covenant (9-15, 7-6 USAS) built an eight-point halftime lead and made in hold up down the stretch. Huntington (3-21, 2-11) was led by Andre Ashley, who had 16 points and seven rebounds. The women’s game was not over by press time.
