Gay kids don’t go to prom.
They can’t. Some schools refuse to sell them tickets. (Straight couples only!)
Or they won’t. People stare. And mock. Or threaten to beat you up in the parking lot. Or worse, they beat up your soul.
“I have been told that I’m going to hell,” one student told me.
So if you do go to prom, you go as a lie, pretending to be what you’re not. Straight, when you’re really gay. Friends, when you’re more. Happy in a dress, when you’re dying for a suit.
